Is Eczema the Same as Psoriasis?

Eczema and psoriasis can look alike—both cause red, inflamed, and itchy patches—but they are different conditions with distinct causes and treatments.[1]

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) usually starts in childhood. It's linked to a weak skin barrier and an over-reactive immune system, leading to very dry, itchy skin, often on the elbows, knees, neck, and face.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that speeds up skin-cell turnover. Instead of taking a month to renew, skin cells build up in just days, forming thick, silvery-white plaques.[2]

A quick way to tell them apart: eczema itches more; psoriasis flakes more. Eczema responds best to moisturisers and anti-inflammatory creams, while psoriasis often needs medicines that calm the immune system.

If you're unsure which one you have, see a healthcare professional—getting the right diagnosis ensures the right treatment and better skin health.
